MOANA – Creative Spaces

“The Moana Chambers project returns a glorious 1900s building to the everyday life of Hay Street. A set of small and careful moves articulate new works from old, making for a project that, with only a shoe-string budget, has brought a broad audience inside the walls of a grand structure after more than ten years of vacancy.
Once wrapped in plasterboard and plywood, its foyer now leads the observer off the mall, past gleaming brass cabinets, up a timber and wrought iron stair – all aired for the first time in decades – past the heavy beams that tell the story of the building’s construction and into the old, high ceilinged dining space.
Here, a gallery greets you, standing between a balcony-café that overlooks the Mall and a co-working space. The architectural works throughout are subservient to the detail of the original building, standing free of its walls and ceilings and constructing clean lines through the space. The materials of the new work are stark and raw, legible against the existing. The gallery is wrapped in jarrah, seeming to emerge from the floor and reach for the ceiling. Wherever possible, the story, character and texture of the Chambers pervade”.
