“This compact two level house, built to three lot boundaries prompted an interpretation of the terrace typology. The form and volume of the house responds to the northern orientation, admitting sun to living areas whilst affording street level privacy.
The sheer western facade abuts a right of way integrating the house with the adjacent buildings and providing access to a rear garage. The ground floor is universally accessible, with the primary living areas, bedroom, study and robes accessed via sliding doors with flush thresholds.
Adaptable wet areas and linear planning arrangements ensure continuous paths of travel and anticipate aged care living. At the upper level, a bridge over the dining area modulates scale and volume and provides interaction between the public areas.
A hall separates the bedrooms and links the front balcony and rear deck which is a generous, private outdoor living area with year round solar access, protected from the prevailing wind. Parapet walls allowed internal volumes to be maximised within regulation whilst concealing a three kilowatt photovoltaic array and solar hot water system. Built from limestone and Australian timbers the house has a consistent solidity, low embodied energy footprint and strong material relationship to its locality”.
