SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE: Shortlist
“A small project comprising the enclosure of an existing first floor terrace to a home in South Fremantle.
The project was envisaged as a ‘plug-in’ that addresses environmental and experiential concerns alongside the programmatic. A steeply pitched roof form extends to harness winter sun and adds dramatic volume to this end of the house.
A plywood shell lines the interior of the space and imparts a glow to natural light passing down from clerestory windows. This shell is articulated by a thin plywood edge spaced off walls and ceiling, a detail that aims to tell a story about the layering which has occurred. Concealed lighting strengthens this narrative.
Externally, the addition is given the same language as an existing expressed stairwell, which tacks onto the side of the main building. It is therefore envisaged as one of a family of ‘plug-ins’ as opposed to an isolated event. Given the modest nature of the project it felt appropriate to develop an allegiance”.
