RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE – HOUSES: Shortlisted.
“Built from strong, hard wearing and brutal materials, this home takes sensitivity from its breaks in form and open, airy circulation and gathering spaces.
The courtyard creates a light well for the house as well as an interruption to the solid form- a means to let the house breathe. On the Ground Floor the courtyard forms an exterior living space sheltering from the prevailing winds and harsh climate conditions. Oregon boards have been used as formwork for the large structural elements which create the entry and welcome the occupants into the home. A staircase splits and divides the planning- separating the main areas located on the upper level from the areas designated for the adult sons on the ground level.
Marble ‘breeze blocks’ mimic the linear formation of the formed concrete, whilst also providing privacy and ambiance to the external living areas.
Timber clad panels create a strong unbroken element of form throughout the house but are designed to open and dissolve bedrooms, bathrooms and other living areas. The strong vertical formation of the timber walls is reflected in the Perth City skyline- a view expanded across the main bedroom and living areas”.
