arc 7.1 – Refreshing Renovation
arc seven.1 is a multi award winning building and interior design practice established in 2004.
The team of Jason Saunders and Nicole Tollman has over 20 years experience in design service.
arc seven.1 approach to design is all-encompassing from the built form, interior fit out to the landscape. This produces a harmonious linkage between these three disciplines.
Recently arc seven.1 was awarded for this renovation at the Building Design Association of WA awards [BDAWA] as well as the overall design excellence award.

Tell us a little about this project and your design brief?
“Inspired by the exterior lighting of the historic buildings of Europe, this project involved a contemporary two-storey addition to a 1930s character home in the suburb of North Perth. Our aim was to create a light, airy, versatile structure that can flexibly meet the family’s need for both living and for professional spaces, while going well beyond Western Australia’s sustainability standards: the renovation has converted the inefficient original home to one that exceeds seven stars across the whole building.
The home’s design emphasises the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, while the lightweight cantilevered first floor projects out into space, seemingly unsupported, adding to its overall light touch. The versatility of the design will also allow meeting and studio spaces to be readily converted to adapt to the family’s changing needs”.
“Having bought the house in 2009 and pregnant with twins, the 1937 Art Deco bungalow need to be extensively renovated and extended to allow for a growing family as well as space to run a busy design practice.
Their aim was to create a seamless, contemporary addition to their character-filled bungalow. It had to be an energy efficient, light-filled space that allows both the family and the family business to expand, without detracting from the original single-storey home, and still allowing space for the kids to play outdoors and the family to entertain”.
Do you have any advice for clients wanting to renovate before they engage with a designer?
“There are two points I always say to potential clients.
1. Have a clear direction as to what you would like to achieve.
2. Allow the designer or architect creative licence, don’t retard their design process by presenting them a restricting brief or ‘sketch plans’. This is why you engage them”.
